You Want to Buy a Diamond
I have two links on this web site that will help you with the terminology on buying diamonds. One is The Gemological Institute of America, and the other is The American Gem Society. See our links page Both of these web site will help you learn about the four C’s, cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. The system of categorizing the quality of a diamond seems simple but it is not a precise system. It is a system of opinions.
Please do not get caught up in the terminology. The best way to buy diamonds is to visit a qualified jeweler that you trust from recommendations from your friends or family an look at diamonds of all qualities.
Many of my customers say “I know nothing about diamonds so I wouldn't know what I am looking at!” and go on to try to buy a diamond based on a piece of paper called a “Certificate.” In reality most people can really see the differences between a quality diamond and one that isn’t, if they just take the time to look at them.
Of the 4C’s the most important is the cut and most jewelers do not even discuss this point about their diamonds.
Cut
Diamonds do something better no other gem comes even close to and that is sparkle, or more technically it is called scintillation. This sparkle is what your eye sees the first time that you look at a diamond. Sparkle is the reflected light that enters the top of the diamond. Certainly color and clarity are important, but sparkle is what you see first last and in the middle. The amount of sparkle all depends on how well the diamond cutter fashioned, or cut, the diamond. Our Hearts On Fire Diamonds are considered the Worlds Most Perfectly Cut Diamonds. In our store you can compare these diamonds with other types of modern round brilliant cut diamonds and see the differences in the sparkle.
